Arunachal win 3 bronze on opening day

RANCHI (Jharkhand), Feb 13: The Karatekas of  Arunachal Pradesh created history by winning three medals on the opening day of the 34th National Games here today.

Likha Rajen, Chunnu Sangno and Tarh Tapak won a Bronze medal each in their respective weight categories in Sheikh Bhikhari Indoor Stadium here. While Rajen won his medal in Men’s Kumite (below 67 kg) Chunnu and Tapak bagged their medals in Women’s Kumite (below 61 kg) and Men’s Kumite (below 75 kg).

In Lawn Bowl, the Arunachal Men’s Triple team beat West Bengal 24-12 in the first game and lost to Jharkhand 13-24 in the second game played at RK Anand Greens here. They will play against Meghalaya tomorrow. A win against the team will ensure Arunachal Pradesh atleast a Bronze in the event.

In Pairs (Doubles), the Men’s team beat West Bengal 16-13 and lost to Rajasthan 13-16 in league level matches here. The competition of the Women’s team were going on when this report was being prepared. Meanwhile Arunachal Olympic Association President Padi Richo, who is presently camping here (Ranchi) to encourage the Arunachal team, congratulated all the medal winning players for their brilliant performance in such prestigious event. He appealed to the State Government for cash awards to all the medal winning player for bringing laurel to the state.

It is pertaining to mention here that the State Government had announced to give cash award of Rs. 10 lakh, Rs 5 lakh and Rs. 2 lakh to Gold, Silver and Bronze medalist of National Games and internationally recognized games.

Coach Deben Sharma, however, was disappointed by the  performance of his boys. He said that the players could not perform upto their potential today. Had they performed upto their mark Arunachal could have won at least two gold medals today. He, however, hoped that his boys and girls will not disappoint the people of Arunachal and win atleast a Gold tomorrow.

Four Karatekas, including first National Games medalist Debia Yakap, international players Nobin Jamoh, Yomken Noshi, and Gold medalist in All India Karate Championship (2007 & 2008)  Rei Yadi will vie for the top honour against tops players of the country tomorrow.

 

Changlang district Night Cricket T20 begins

JAIRAMPUR, Feb 13: The most awaited sporting event the Changlang District Night Cricket T20 Tournament - 2011 was declared open by the Parliamentary Secretary Phusum Khimhum in presence of Finance Minister Setong Sena here at a glittering ceremony today. Applauding the efforts of the District Youth Congress President James Jugli and his team, Sena said that it’s wonderful that finally the youths of the districts are shouldering their responsibilities on their own. It is for the first time that such mega sporting event has been organized in the district, he added.

Khimhum, the chief guest of the programme said this magnificent event justifies that if the youth’s works collectively as a team they can do wonders with their energy and creativity.

Further he appealed the youths to come forward and take initiatives on their own for the betterment of the society and development of the state.

Youth Congress must continue organizing such events so that the youths taking the erroneous path can be barred, he added.

Earlier, the guest of honor Junpo Jugli Zilla Parishad Chairperson said that it is the beginning of a new era for the youths of the district and also appealed the youths to participate in every kind of competitive events in the future.

Arunachal Pradesh Youth Congress General Secretary and I/c Tirap and Changlang Likha Benjamin lauded DYC president James Jugli and his team for organizing such impressive tournament.

Meanwhile, APYC general secretary Marpin Basar appealed all the youths of the district to join youth Congress as it is considered as the best platform for the upliftment of the society along with the development of the area and the villages.

Previously, in his welcome speech, DYC president James Jugli, thanked Sena for the support. Without his support such mega tournament would not have been accomplished, he said. It is worth mentioning here that this tournament is being organized without any govt. funding but from the local resources.

Besides  other dignitaries, Changlang DC Opak Gao, SP Tumme Ammo, ADC M Roy, DYC general secretary Passeng Kenglang, Ex ZP Chairperson Izmir Tikhak, Public leader Aboo Kimsing, Limatan Jugli were also  present during the opening  ceremony.

Later in the stunning opening match Jairampur B team defeated Ko Hon Tai team by 51 runs. Raj Tamang who scored 89 runs was declared man of the match and received a cheque of Rs. 5000.00.

 

PC calls for speedy execution of projects in state

Khandu pleads for 8 more infrastructure development projects

ITANAGAR, Feb 13: Planning Commission (PC) member B K Chaturvedi and advisor (NE) SN Brahma Chowdhury accompanied with principal secretary Dr H K Paliwal arrived here on a three-day trip to assess the progress of various ongoing infrastructure projects in the border areas of the state. Addressing a high level meeting held to review the progress of the PM’s package and other central sponsored projects this afternoon at CMs conference hall, Chaturvedi called for speedy and timely execution of the projects. Terming the experience of coming to Arunachal Pradesh as coming to home, Chaturvedi sought a proper plan and vision for the development of Arunachal Pradesh.

Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu pleaded the visiting member of Planning Commission for sanctioning 8 major projects for addressing the infrastructural bottleneck of the state.

The proposal included 132 KV Trans-Arunachal Grid, Drinking Water facility in Border blocks, Porter Tracks & Foot Suspension Bridges/Log bridges in border areas, ‘Connecting 22 unconnected Administrative Centers along the International Border’, expediting construction of Greenfield Airport.

Khandu informed Chaturvedi that all centrally sponsored schemes including the flagship programmes of Government of India are being judiciously implemented in the state. “Third party monitoring, uploading of works execution in the government websites are some of the examples that Arunachal Government is ensuring that no stone is left unturned in order to give a facelift to the state in the developmental front”, Khandu assertively said while expecting a commitment from the visiting dignitary towards the pressing demand.

While assuring all possible steps to come up to the expectation of the Centre, Khandu thanked the PC Deputy Chairman Dr Montek Singh Ahulwalia and the duo for their support.

He said the AOP of the state has taken a quantum jump from Rs 1132 crore in 2007-08 to Rs 2500 in 2010-11 because of the special consideration of the planning panel for this under developed state.

Khandu said the support of the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi would help the state overcome its infrastructure bottleneck and join the national main stream.

The huge hydropower potential once tapped would immensely contribute towards nation building while enriching the state coffer and speed up state’s development, Khandu added.

The executing departments through PowerPoint presentation highlighted the progress of various projects.

Earlier Development Commissioner VK Dev in his welcome address gave a brief on the execution of various central schemes and judicious utilization of fund.

Among others all the commissioners, secretaries and Chief Engineers were present in the meeting.

Earlier, both the PC member and advisor (NE) accompanied with Khandu inspected the on going Rs 77.25 crore Itanagar drinking water supply project (Phase-II), Rs 130 crore secretariat building, Rs 60 crore assembly building, Rs 75 crore speaker’s bungalow and MLAs’ apartments. PRO to CM.

 

Ahoms celebrate Me-dam-me-phi

ITANAGAR, Feb 13: The Ahom community living in Itanagar and Naharlagun celebrated Me-dam-me-phi at Mahila Imdad Bhawan, Barapani, Naharlagun today. This festival is celebrated every year in memory of departed ancestors of the community and to remember their contributions to the society.

Speaking on the occasion, Arunachal Pradesh Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board, Chairman Jalley Sonam lauded the Ahoms living in state capital for preserving their age-old culture and tradition.

He advised the younger generation to follow the footstep of their parents or forefathers in order to preserve own identity and tradition and also suggested them to organize Me-dam-me-phi in a grand way in near future. He further underscored the importance of peaceful co-existence between the people of Assam and Arunachal. He said Assamese community residing in the state should play a proactive role in the hours of need in maintaining the age-old relations that has been maintained by the people of both the neighbouring states.

Further strongly criticizing the trend of imposing huge amount as fine during accident by some people, Sonam called upon all sections of the society to collectively wipe out such trend and added that the imposition of fine in time of accident brings only bad names to the society.

He donated some amount to the Me-dam-me-phi organizing committee and assured to extend all possible help to them if such accident or incident comes in their way in near future.

On the occasion, besides performing of rituals, cultural programmes and lectures by senior members of the Ahoms were also organized.

 

Festival greetings

ITANAGAR, Feb 13: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Gen JJ Singh has extended heartiest greetings and warm regards to all the people of Arunachal Pradesh on the auspicious occasion of Shapawng Yawng Manau Poi.

In his festival message, Governor hoped that this expression of reverence and respect to the great ancestor of our Singpho brethren, Shapawng Yawng appeases him and evoke his blessings for well being of all human beings.  May this festival of rituals and dances further strengthen the bond of relationship in the society, Gen Singh wished.

Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu has also greeted the people of Arunachal Pradesh particularly the Singpho community on the auspicious occasion of Shapawng Yawng Manau Poi festival.

In his festival message Khandu said “I am extremely happy to learn that the Singpho community of Changlang District is celebrating their 27th SHAPAWNG  YAWNG  MANAU  POI Festival w.e.f 13th - 15th February  at Bordumsa”.

“I deem it a great privilege to extend my hearty greetings to my beloved people of Arunachal in general and to my Singpho brethrens in particular. Festivals indeed strengthen the emotional integration and foster the feelings of brotherhood and mutual understanding amongst our citizens” the message further added.

 

AAPSU appeals for early release of stipend

ITANAGAR, Feb 13: All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) has appealed to the state government to immediately release stipend of primary school students.  While other students have received their stipend, primary school students are yet to receive their share of stipend which is causing lot of problem.

In a press statement AAPSU President Takam Tatung urged state government to release stipends of primary school at the earliest. “Everybody knows that only poor student studies in government school. And by not releasing stipend of these poor students state government is committing a sin,” said AAPSU President Takam Tatung. He further said student can use stipend money to buy books for themselves. “Most of the poor students living at interior places can’t afford to buy even notebooks and pens. Majority of them depend on stipend money to buy study materials and withholding their stipend government is doing great disservice,” stated Tatung. He also asked state government to release stipends of all the secondary level students of entire district of state.  AAPSU has threatened to launch state agitation if stipend money of all students is not released in time.

Meanwhile AAPSU while expressing happiness over visit of planning commission member BK Chaturvedi and his team to Arunachal has urged them to take stock of ground situation. “Planning commission sends lot of money to state every year but there is no real development in Arunachal. We request commission member BK Chaturvedi to interact with ordinary public, NGOs to know whether central funds are being used properly in Arunachal by state government,” stated AAPSU President Takam Tatung. Specially urging team to visit government schools and colleges, Tatung said such visit will help them to get real picture of poor education scenario of Arunachal.

 

APSCW felicitates Mamang Dai

ITANAGAR, Feb 13: Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) has felicitated eminent poet, author and journalist Mamang Dai on her being chosen for prestigious Padmashri Award.

Addressing an impressive felicitation function organized at Banquet Hall here yesterday, APSCW chairperson Komoli Mossang said, Dai shines as a beacon of women empowerment in the state, not only for being nominated as one of the 128 recipients of the Padmashri award announced on the eve of the Republic Day celebration, but also for her contribution in materialization of the APSCW Rules 2004.

While recounting her association with Mamang Dai, Mossang said, the noted novelist Dai had all the makings of a great presence in the world of literature, education and creativity ever since her years in the Jawaharlal Nehru Collage, as a young student.

Delighted Mamang Dai, while sharing her thought said “I am a reclusive writer ..... but an award like Padmashri is a kind of endorsement by the Govt of India and it makes me stop and look back and retrospect. While it puts a new responsibility on me to represent my land, my people, my friends in a better, more meaningful and truest way, I also hope it will create a space for literature, art, craft and for women empowerment in the state.”

The first APSCW Vice- Chairperson Mepung Tader delivered the welcome address and said that her (Dai’s) works are a “labor of love for our land, people and literature.”

Among others DGP, Kanwalijeet Deol, (IPS), renowned social worker and a winner of Durgabhai Deshmekh Award for social work  Bini Yanga, founder president and advisor of Assam Arunachal Lekhika Samonnay Somaroh Minoti Riba, former Chairperson APSWB, former Member APSCW and president APWWS,  Gumri Ringu, former  president Nyem Acham and women activist Higio Aruni participated in the programme.

The august gathering joined voice to relive the achievement of Daying Ering, Omem Moyong Deori and Lama Thupten Phuntsok who had won the Padmashree Award earlier.  A poem titled – “Such a mind have I seen” was dedicated to Padmashree Mamang Dai by the APSCW to mark the occasion.

 

Assault on worker alleged, DC flays allegation as false and misleading

ITANAGAR, Feb 13: Alleging that the Kurung Deputy Commissioner has physically assaulted one Bengia Roi, a worker of NBCC Ltd project at Koloriang on Feb 11, the proprietor of Lokam Brother’s and Company, Lokam Nai said that such act of the DC should be condemned by all section of the society.

“I am the PA holder of the project (infrastructure development of Koloriang township) and Roi is working under the project”, Nai said while adding that the DC assaulted him (Roi) without any reason when he was at work site which led him to admit in hospital. A FIR has been lodged in Koloriang police station in this connection, he added.

When contacted, Kurung Kumey DC termed the alleged assault incident as false and misleading.

The DC clarified that on Feb 11, one Bengia Roi was bulldozing government land near the new DC office Koloriang by wielding a .22 rifle. On getting the information, he along with a magistrate and a police person rushed to the spot and arrested Roi and put him behind the bar. Later, Police recovered and seized a .22 rifle magazine containing live cartridges. A case has been registered against Roi under section 188 IPC, he further informed.

Giving details of the initiatives of the administration, the DC further clarified that all the land donors of the new district headquarters are complying with the magisterial order prohibiting unplanned construction and earth cutting to ensure systematic town planning and checking encroachment and illegal construction in Koloriang.

The district administration is getting full support from all quarters in its initiatives. However, a handful of people are violating the executive order and undertaking construction by violating the order, thereby disturbing the town planning, the DC asserted.

A violator of the executive order is now trying to give a new twist to the incident by making false allegation against the DC and misleading the story, he added.

 

21st APLS sitting ends with inspiring literary discourse

ITANAGAR, Feb 13: Creative literature is the only vehicle to adjoin the hearts of people irrespective of caste, creed, community and religion. It is true in global perspective also.  In connotation with this perception and ideal, Arunachal Pradesh Literary Society (APLS) led by Y D Thongchi, president and an academy awardee and Padmashree Mamang Dai, general secretary has been extending literary forum to the budding writers. Today, the monthly literary sitting of the APLS, the 21st in a series, was held at J.N. State Museum conference hall.

Presided over by Tokong Pertin, Director Border Affairs, associate professor, department of Hindi, RGU, Jamuna Binny, recited a self composed poem on Tsunami “Khooni Tsunami Leheren” which portrays the tragic consequences of Tsunami.

R N Koley recited his self composed poem named “Hirdai Bhag Korte Debna” revealing the literature is cementing factor.

Professor Binny has displayed the national Hindi magazines where her poems were recently published. She conveyed her gratitude that all this poems are as an outcome of inspiration from APLS.

Later an enchanting discussion is happened on development of writing skill particularly creative writings. Among others, Rajeev Takuk, Director Border Affairs, Dr Pekba Ringu, Senior Medical Officer, Bompi Riba, Associate Prof. English Deptt. RGU, Takhe Kani, an eminent writer, Y S Wallington, Asstt. Tago advocates for Electoral and Political Research Institute

Chennai, Feb 13: A comprehensive draft bill on regulation of political parties has been formulated under the guidance and supervision of Justice Ventkatachaliah. The need for this bill and its contents was broadly discussed and endorsed by the participants of the 7th National Conference from across the country including the members of various political parties, Civil Societies and Election Commission of India. The leaders of political parties present in the conference were T.K.S Elangovan (DMK) Dr. Maitrenyan (AIADMK),  D.Raja (CPI), Mr. Gnanadesikan (INC),  Madhavan kutty (CPIM) and R. Velu (PMK).

Recognizing the emerging threat of govt’s money power in election processes, the two days 7th National Conference on Electoral Reform  which concluded today endorsed the recommendations made by National Election Watch (NEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) on electoral and political reforms. It was also resolved that all civil societies/NGOs participated in the conference will remain committed to work in a non-partisan, ethical and transparent manner.

 Earlier, while participating debate on the topic “ANTI-CORRUPTION” , Bamang Tago, Chairperson of Arunachal Citizen’s Rights (ACR) said that although there  exist inner-democracy in political party with every right to discuss their internal matter but recommendation of more than one candidate  for party ticket to Delhi is  also a root cause of the corruption.

  Tago also said that there is need for establishment of Electoral and Political Research Institute in the country in tune with Defence Research Institute of India, Indian Institute of Public administration, Centre for policy research etc founded by UGC. He also suggested for  designated Fast Tract Court for the electoral related offence.

Tago also informed that NEW and ADR is facilitating a regional consultation on electoral reforms  at Guwahati on 18th February next. Source

UNI adds from Bangalore: A draft legislation on comprehensive amendments to the election law will be ready in the next three to four months and the Bill is likely to come up before Parliament during the Winter Session, Law Minister M Veerappa Moily today indicated.

Talking to newsmen on the sidelines of the regional consultation on electoral reforms, Moily said while some of the proposals reforming the electoral process of the country need Constitutional amendment, some would require amendments to the Respresentation of People's Act.

A few changes could also be made through modifications in rules and procedures, he added.

 

Reila- annual festival of RGGP ends

Itanagar, Feb 13:   The fou- day  Recreation, Information, Entertainment, and Literary Activity (REILA)  of Rajiv Gandhi Government  Polytechnic,  ended  with  colorful  programs  here on Feb 12. The  closing  ceremony  started  with  opening  remarks by Er. A.K. Tripathy, the principal  of the  Polytechnic.  He extended   his congratulations  to the program  Co-ordinator Chukhu Mam (Proctor), Co-Coordinator M. Libang , Student Co-ordinator Jill Likha, REILA Co-ordination committee, faculties,  staff   and students   for the grand  success of the  annual  function. He also appreciated  the discipline, decorum  and  strict  timing  maintained  by  the  guests   and  the  polytechnic  family  members.

The Chief  guest  of the  evening  P.K. Behera, Director, KVIC  has categorically underscored  the need  of  such  type  of  recreational  programme  for  technical  students   and  assured  to extend all help  for  collaborative  activities   with  polytechnic.

The  Guest  of honour  of the  function, Hari Biswas,  Chairman, National Youth  Project (NYP) has  informed  the  student,  regarding various  activities    of NYP   and  advised students  to be the part  of  this  program in a big  way  to take  Arunachal  to a new  dimension.

The program ended  with  address  by  Chukhu Mama,  the   proctor of RGGP embedded  with a  enchanting  fusion fashion  show  by  students,  comprising  traditional    and contemporary  rounds.  

 

APCU to organize leadership training programme

ITANAGAR, Feb 13: The 2nd executive body meeting of the Arunachal Pradesh Catholic Union (APCU) was held under the chairmanship of its president Tok Buttum here on Feb 8. Among others, the meeting was attended by two bishops, priests, nuns, political leaders, bureaucrats, entrepreneurs, academicians, social workers.

After marathon discussion on the need of leadership in the society in general and Catholic community in particular, enhancement of remuneration for catechist and discussion on  laity and clergy relationship the meeting resolved to organize leadership training in cooperation with the Bishops for the laity leaders to cope with the challenges faced by the Catholic Church in particular and the society as a whole.

 The union also discussed on the question of forceful discussion. It resolved to oppose the terminology of "forceful conversion". APCU believes that no logic or philosophy can make any person to convert. Conversion is usually done by the spirit through the love and services of fellow human being, it observed.

 

High yielding varieties of apple introduced in West Kameng

ITANAGAR, Feb 13: KVK West Kameng under the aegis of National Horticulture Board (NHB) Gurgaon, Haryana planted 280 numbers of high yielding varieties of apple Golden Spur, Silver Spur, Well Spur, Oregon Spur, Bright N Early, Red Chief and Top Red at Zimthung village under Dirang Block as mother trees for further multiplication and higher profitability for apple growers in the district.

The mother trees were planted at farmers’ field under the supervision of Sr. Deputy Director, Dr. R. K Sharma and Dr. Jagmohan Badiyal of NHB Gurgaon and College of Horticulture and Forestry, Solan, A.Pratap, SMS(Agronomy) KVK, accompanied the resource person.

Earlier, a short term training programme on pruning of Apple was conducted at Morshing Village on February 10 last.

On the occasion, Dr. N.D Singh, Programme Coordinator highlighted the commercial importance of quality planting materials and its proper management measures in the region.

Altogether, 60 farmers from Morshing, Shergaon, Sanglem and Domkho participated in the training programme in addition to Gaon Burahs, ASMs and other officials.

The farmers and other members present on the occasion were appealed the Kendra to conduct similar kind of programmes for the apple growers from time to time in the locality. They also demanded the department officials to provide them with high yielding varieties of apple for higher profitability and return on their investments.

Workshop for students

ITANAGAR, Feb 13: Vivekanda Kendra Arun Jyoti conducted a workshop "Pariksha De Haste Haste programme” at Govt. College Bomdila on February 10-12.

During the workshop Yogasana and Pranayam were imparted to students. Through this Yogasana and Pranayam they learnt how to face the examination with confidence and without fear or ill health and also how to face the challenges of life.

The students of Govt. College Bomdila and the Govt. higher Secondary school Bomdila attended the workshop.

Water quality testing kit sets distributes

ITANAGAR, Feb 13: Rural Development Society, Daporijo branch under the sponsorship of communication and capacity development unit, Itanagar under PHE Department distributed water quality testing kit sets to 42 Anchal Samiti members of Daporijo and Giba Anchal block on February 9 and 10 last.

The RDSD branch Paktin Bagbi further informed that the next phase of kit sets distribution would be held in other blocks of the district soon.

 

Narayanswamy to be chief guest

ITANAGAR, Feb 13: Union Minister of State for Planning and Parliamentary Affairs and party's in-charge for Arunachal Pradesh V Narayanswamy and Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu would attend the inaugural function of the Pasighat centenary celebration as chief guest and guest of honour respectively on Feb 16.

Let us fight corruption

Dear Editor,

Our state which lies on the north-eastern part of India is surrounded by many hills. The land is blessed with amazing variety of flora and fauna.  Within a short period of time, the state of Arunachal Pradesh has produced many great personalities in the field of sports, politics, art and culture etc. In spite of plenty of natural resources with resourceful persons, our state is tagged as one of the corrupt states in the country. Arunachal ranks in the top 5 corrupted states of the country. Now it is said that our state is lagging behind in term of development because of corruption.

However, everyone still dreams of a developed state in all spheres. Such dreams can be converted into reality if steps are being taken by all. I am sure, with full support of the present generation, Arunachal will be a front runner in near future.

Make ANSU conference a students’ affair

Dear Editor,

The East Kameng district unit of Nyishi Elite Society (NES) feels that it is prudent to hold the general conference cum election of All Nyishi Students’ Union at Seppa from Feb 17 to 20. We at the NES district unit wish them all success and would like to suggest the convenor and executive members of the union to maintain certain basic parameters of activities during the conference.

As all of us are aware that certain vested interests and mischief-mongers are working round the clock to dislodge the unity and integrity of the community, I would like to affirm that the rumours that the ANSU conference cum election is backed by the NES are malicious and unfounded. Since electing their leaders is the affairs of student community, NES has nothing to do with the conference, apart from suggestions and advices, whatsoever when situations demand. The senior and intellectual members of the community are also expected to restrain and dissociate themselves from the activities of the students to make the conference a students’ affair only. The elections of the executive members of the Union are solely the affair of student community and nothing else. Interference from any quarter must be stopped at the cost of the students’ prowess.

In this context, I am of the opinion that the process of election and campaigning may be carried with minimum possible use of money and materials, which speculates to tarnish the free and fair election of the union. The logistic supports from the sources whose intentions may be divisive and dissentious must be avoided for furtherance of the best outcome. ANSU has the legacy of shouldering the responsibility of carrying forward the social and emotional integrity of the society since inception. A lot of achievements in the field of education and social awareness decorate the cap of the ANSU. It has acted as catalyst to bind together the loose ends of the society whenever situation demanded.

At this juncture, we expect, without any apprehension, a galaxy of budding social activists moulded with mature outlooks and determinations out of the conference. Hope, the conference brings forth the tradition of free and fair conduct of elections, while maintaining its social implications intact.

Swami Vivekananda and our society

Dear Editor,

Swami Vivekananda was a man of exemplary character and virtue. Swamiji, commonly viewed as a religious leader, had a direct impact on the Indian Renaissance whose seed's were sown by the social reformer Raja Ram Mohan Roy.

Among Swamiji's many contributions some stand out more distinctly then others. To begin with, his outspoken protest against the evils of  a society steeped in tradition broke a lot of barriers. He questioned the very roots of a lot of religious customs, and taught about practicing religion through deeds and actions then mere talk.

Secondly, the founding of the Ramakrishna Mission as something more than agent of religion but a vehicle to render service to the common people was another major contribution. This organization is Swamiji's legacy to the world, something that stands for the common masses and is ever present in the turning of the wheels of renaissance. Finally, on a global scale, Swamiji built a bridge between Indian culture and western culture. He presented India in a new light to the west as more than a land of magicians, and mystique. He helped in the fusion of Indian philosophy and western science and technology which shaped the environment for further progress.

Swamiji also emphasized the necessity of education. He stated emphatically that if society is to be reformed, education is to reach every part of Indian society. He said, "Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man". Through his scheme of education, he tried to uplift society irrespective of caste, creed, nationality or time. Swamiji also believed greatly in the power of the youth. All through his speeches he called for the youth of India to step forward and help him rebuild India. His speeches, letters have been instrumental in shaping India. As Rabindranath Tagore said to Roman Rolland "If you want know India, read Vivekananda".

It is high time for us to take Swamiji's mantle forward and give serious thought to his philosophy and remember his call to everybody - `Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached.'

Final assurance yet to be fulfilled

I, on behalf of All Job Contracts Employees Union (AJCEU), KaHEP NEEPCO, would like to draw kind attention of NEEPCO authority and the state Govt. towards our demands and grievances.

The Hydro Power Project under NEEPCO was started in the year 1999 after signing of a MoU with a condition that the people living in the affected area will be benefited from its project. Accordingly the project was allowed without any objection from the affected area. The innocent people were convinced that there will be job opportunities for unemployed youths, but till date not a single unemployed youth has been appointed by the NEEPCO authority. Few unemployed were selected on contract basis with a meager salary of Rs. 5000 only per month. Therefore the unemployed youths have raised their demand for permanent absorption and regularization. The union had staged dharna and agitation and submitted several representations to Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu and to the NEEPCO authority. In response to our demand, the CM had written a DO letter Union Power Minister  Sushil Kumar Shinde requesting him to lift the ban imposed on the appointment of C & D grade job. But the CM’s letter had not been responded due to the lackadaisical attitude on the part of NEEPCO officials.

The union is of the view that had the letter of CM been taken seriously the appointment process would have started, but the concerned NEEPCO authorities did not apprised the matter to union minister and the letter had been ignored.

On 22nd July, 2009 a round table meeting was held at Bhalukpong in which the NEEPCO authority had given assurance to complete recruitment by March 31, 2011, but it seems that the concerned authorities have forgotten and overlooked again and there is less chance of recruitment as its process has not been started yet.

Thereafter, a meeting was conducted at Kimi (West Kameng) between head of project (HoP) NEEPCO and the unemployed youths on Oct 31, 2010,  in which  NEEPCO authorities  had given last and final assurance for regularization of the youths selected on contracts basis, otherwise the All Hrusso (Aka) Student Union (ARSU), All Hrusso (Aka) Socio-Culture Society (ARSCS) and All Job Contracts Employees Union (AJCEU) will launch second phase agitation against the NEEPCO  from April 1 to 3, 2011 within KaHEP NEEPCO project area.

There are lots of such Hydro Power projects to be installed in different parts of Arunachal Pradesh and on the other hand Hydro Power developers are facing objections from various corners. Under such situation, failure on the part of authorities to fulfill the terms and conditions of the MoU will certainly send a wrong message in other parts of the state. We request the state Govt to look into the matter and to direct the NEEPCO authority that the assurance given by HOP be fulfilled.

Punish the assaulters

The assault on an assistant professor Atege Linggi by so called students’ leader without any provocation has immensely hurt the sentiment of the Idu community.

We request the concern administration to take up this issue seriously and punish the culprits according to the law. Our best wishes are always with Atege Linggi and his family.
